Hey fall lovers! 🎃
Okay, can we please talk about how pumpkin painting is so much better than carving? Like, I love a good jack-o’-lantern as much as the next person, but painted pumpkins last way longer, there’s no gross scooping involved, and honestly, the creative possibilities are endless.
I’ve been experimenting with different pumpkin painting techniques all season, and I’m here to share all the ideas that actually worked (plus a few fails that taught me valuable lessons). Whether you’re going for Instagram-worthy aesthetics or just want a fun weekend project, these ideas will have your porch looking like a fall masterpiece.
Why Painting > Carving (Fight Me)
First off, painted pumpkins last for months instead of rotting in a week. You can keep them through Thanksgiving and even into winter if you do it right. Plus, no sharp knives, no pumpkin guts under your fingernails, and way more room for creativity.
You can also use those gorgeous heirloom pumpkins – the white ones, the blue-gray ones, those amazing warty gourds – without feeling guilty about destroying their natural beauty.

The Creative Process
The best part about pumpkin painting is that there are literally no rules. You can go realistic, abstract, minimalist, maximalist – whatever feels right for your space and aesthetic.
I love setting up a painting station outside on a nice fall day with all my supplies, some good music, and just letting creativity flow. It’s incredibly meditative and the results always surprise me.
Don’t stress about making them perfect. The handmade, slightly imperfect quality is what makes painted pumpkins so charming and personal.
Happy painting, fall lovers! 🍂✨
