Can we talk about how I used to spend ten minutes every morning searching for my everyday mascara? TEN MINUTES. It was always buried under something, or rolled behind my makeup bag, or somehow ended up in a drawer I never use.
Then I finally organized my vanity and it’s honestly been life-changing. My makeup routine is faster, I’m actually using products I forgot I had, and my space looks like somewhere I want to spend time instead of a chaotic crime scene.

Why Vanity Organization Actually Matters
Look, I get it. Organization content can feel preachy or overwhelming. But here’s the thing: when your vanity is organized, getting ready becomes genuinely enjoyable instead of stressful. You can see what you own, find what you need, and you’re way less likely to buy duplicates of things you already have.
Plus, there’s something really nice about sitting down at a clean, organized space. It just feels better.

The Reality Check You Need First
Before you buy ANY organizers, you need to declutter. I know, I know. But trust me on this.
Check expiration dates – Mascara lasts 3 months, liquid foundation about a year, powder products 1-2 years. If it smells weird or the texture changed, toss it.
Be honest about what you actually use – That eyeshadow palette you bought two years ago and used once? You’re not suddenly going to become an eyeshadow person. Let it go.
Test things – Dried out eyeliner? Crusty nail polish? Lipstick that’s the wrong shade? Out.
I threw away an entire bag of stuff and it felt amazing. Suddenly I had room to actually organize what I kept.

The Organization Ideas That Changed Everything
1. Acrylic Organizers Are Worth It
I resisted these for SO long because they felt like an unnecessary expense. Then I caved and bought a set, and wow. Being able to see everything makes such a difference. You don’t have to get fancy expensive ones – I got mine on Amazon for like $25 and they work perfectly.
Get ones with different compartments: tall sections for brushes, medium for lipsticks standing up, shallow drawers for palettes.

2. Organize by Category AND Frequency
Put things you use daily in the most accessible spots. For me, that’s:
- Foundation, concealer, and powder in one section
- Everyday mascara, eyeliner, and brow products together
- My go-to lipsticks and glosses
Things I use occasionally (bold lipsticks, special occasion makeup, backup products) go in drawers or less accessible areas.

3. The Lipstick Organization Strategy
Stand them up! Seriously, laying lipsticks down in a drawer means you can’t see the colors and you’ll forget what you have. Use a lipstick holder or even a shallow drawer organizer where they can stand upright. Organize by color family or finish (mattes together, glosses together).
I can finally see all my lip products at once and it’s made me actually wear them instead of reaching for the same three every day.

4. Brush Holder Solutions
Everyday brushes – Keep them in a cup or holder on top of your vanity. I use a pretty ceramic cup and it holds my daily face and eye brushes.
Full collection – If you have a lot of brushes, use a drawer organizer or a clear acrylic holder with compartments. Keep face brushes separate from eye brushes.
Brush cleaning hack – I keep a small container with brush cleaner nearby so I can do quick cleans between uses without digging around for supplies.

5. Palette Storage That Makes Sense
Vertical storage – Use a mail organizer or file folder holder to store palettes vertically. You can flip through them like files and see what you have.
Drawer dividers – If you have drawers, use adjustable dividers to create sections for different palette sizes.
Displayed on top – If you have a few favorites, display them! Prop them up with small plate stands or lean them against the wall.
I did a combo: everyday palettes on top, special occasion ones stored vertically in a drawer.
6. Skincare Station Setup
Keep your morning routine products separate from your nighttime ones if possible. I use a lazy Susan for my morning skincare (cleanser, toner, moisturizer, sunscreen) and keep nighttime products in a drawer.
Group by order of use – it sounds obvious but it makes your routine so much smoother.
7. The Drawer Divider Game Plan
If your vanity has drawers, dividers are essential. I use a mix of:
- Small square containers for single items (eyelash curler, tweezers, spoolies)
- Longer compartments for eyeliners and lip liners
- Shallow trays for sheet masks and samples
The Container Store has good options, but honestly, you can use small boxes or even cut down cardboard boxes to size if you’re on a budget.
8. Cotton Pad and Q-Tip Storage
Use apothecary jars or clear containers and keep them within reach. I have one jar for cotton pads, one for Q-tips, and one for hair ties. They look nice displayed and they’re functional.
9. Perfume Display Ideas
If you have counter space, display your perfumes on a small tray. It looks pretty and keeps them contained. I use a mirrored tray and it makes the whole area feel more luxe.
If you have a ton of perfumes, keep your current favorites displayed and rotate seasonally.
10. The “Everyday Essentials” Basket
I keep a small basket or tray with my absolute everyday basics: foundation, concealer, mascara, brow pencil, blush, and one neutral lipstick. On rushed mornings, I just grab from this basket and go. Everything else is extra.
Storage Solutions for Different Vanity Types
If You Have Drawers
Use drawer organizers heavily. Keep categories separate. Put your most-used items in the top drawer and less-used items in bottom drawers.
If You Only Have Counter Space
Go vertical with tiered organizers or small shelves. Use wall-mounted magnetic boards for metal palettes. Keep only daily essentials out and store backups elsewhere.
If You Have a Small Space
Be selective about what you keep at your vanity. Store backups and special occasion items in your closet or bathroom. Use multi-functional products when possible.
If You Share Your Vanity
Designate clear zones for each person. Use separate organizers or trays. Respect the system so it doesn’t become a free-for-all.
The Products That Actually Helped
Acrylic organizer set – Around $20-30, totally worth it
Lazy Susan – $10-15, perfect for skincare
Drawer dividers – $15-20 for a set
Brush holders – $5-15 depending on style
Small trays – $10-20, great for corralling items
Total investment: Around $60-100 and it makes a huge difference. You don’t need everything at once – start with one or two items and build from there.

What Didn’t Work for Me
Those super elaborate organizer systems – Too complicated to maintain. I’d let things get messy and then feel guilty about it.
Keeping makeup in bags – Out of sight, out of mind. I’d forget what I had and never use it.
Organizing by brand – Sounds cute but is completely impractical when you’re getting ready.
Too many decorative items – I had candles and little trinkets everywhere and they just got in the way. Less is more for actual usable space.

How to Keep It Organized
Put things back immediately – I know, I know. But it takes two seconds and prevents the chaos from returning.
Do a quick reset once a week – Sunday evenings, I spend five minutes wiping down surfaces and putting stray items back where they belong.
One in, one out rule – When you buy a new lipstick, consider getting rid of one you don’t use. Keeps the collection from exploding.
Seasonal purges – Every few months, reassess what you’re actually using and what’s just taking up space.
The Biggest Mindset Shift
Your vanity should work for YOUR routine, not some aesthetic you saw on Instagram. If you never wear eyeshadow, you don’t need elaborate palette storage. If you’re a skincare minimalist, you don’t need a 12-step product display.
Organize for how you actually live, not for how you think you should live.
Also, it doesn’t have to be perfect. My vanity gets messy sometimes and that’s fine. The organization system just makes it easier to reset when it does.
My Current Setup
Since people always ask: I have a small vanity with two drawers. Top of the vanity has my everyday makeup in acrylic organizers, a brush holder, and a small tray for perfumes. Top drawer has backup makeup and special occasion products. Bottom drawer has skincare, hair accessories, and tools.
It’s simple, it works, and I can get ready in under 15 minutes on most days.
The goal isn’t to have the prettiest vanity setup ever. It’s to have one that makes your life easier and your morning routine less stressful. That’s it.
Now go forth and organize. Your future self will thank you when you’re not frantically searching for your eyeliner at 7am.
