Hey crafty friends! Today I’m super excited to share one of my favorite sustainable crafting obsessions—transforming old denim into gorgeous new creations! If you’re like me, you probably have at least one pair of jeans hiding in your closet that no longer fits or has seen better days. Instead of tossing them, let’s turn that durable fabric into something amazing!
Denim is honestly one of the best materials for upcycling. It’s sturdy, versatile, takes paint and embellishments beautifully, and has that perfect lived-in look that adds character to any project. Plus, repurposing old jeans is a win for your wallet and the planet!
1. Denim Keychain
A simple little accessory are keychain. Grab some stripes of denim and some hardware and that is all you need to add a cool little detail to your outfit.
2. Jacket Embellishment
Cut flowers, stars, or other shapes from colorful sections of jeans and appliqué them onto a plain denim jacket. This project transforms two denim pieces into one statement garment.

3. Embroidery on Denim
The best way to fall back in love with old denim trousers is to embellish them with embroidery. You might only want to add small details like little flowers or a big statement embroidery covering a big part of the pants.

4. Patchwork Denim Tote
Cut rectangles from the least worn parts of your jeans, piece them together, and sew into a sturdy shopping bag. Incorporate the original pockets for extra storage—they’re perfect for your phone or keys!

5. Patchwork Coasters
Cut 4-inch squares from your old jeans, layer a few together, and stitch around the edges with colorful embroidery floss. These make perfect housewarming gifts and use up even the most worn parts of your jeans.

6. Denim Wall Organizer
Attach several pockets from different pairs of jeans to a fabric backing, hang it up, and you’ve got the perfect place to store small items in your craft room or office. The pockets are already made—how convenient is that?

7. Denim Bows
With a few small pieces of denim you can already create these really cool accessories that are definitely an eye-catcher.

8. Denim Plushie
This is where you can be really creative. Cut out cute forms of left over denim pieces and sew on faces with button eyes. So cute!
Tips for Working with Denim
- Use a heavy-duty needle in your sewing machine to prevent breakage
- Wash all jeans before crafting to prevent color transfer and shrinkage later
- Embrace the fraying! Denim’s natural tendency to fray adds character to many projects
- Save the seams – they make great textural elements in many crafts
- Different washes create interest – mix light, medium and dark denim in the same project
I love how working with denim connects us to the history of this iconic fabric while creating something new and personal. Plus, there’s something so satisfying about giving new purpose to a piece of clothing that’s been with you through many adventures!
Happy crafting!
